What is Crosh

Did you know that your Chromebook can do more than just browse the internet. They have a secret that can unlock additional capabilities.  With just a few keystrokes you can unlock the full power of Chrome OS using Crosh. So what is Crosh?

What is Crosh?

Crosh is a shell environment known as “chrome shell” that is provided with Chrome OS. Crosh allows users to run several commands directly from Chrome OS. Developer mode is not required to use Crosh. The vast majority of linux commands are locked down inside Crosh.

How do I access Crosh?

Crosh can be accessed by pressing CTRL+ALT+T on the keyboard. This will open a new tab with the Crosh terminal.

Crosh has two separate versions of help

you can access help in the Crosh window by simple typing help. This will give you a list of commands that can be used inside Crosh. To get a list of the more advanced commands type help_advanced.  A have created a short list of some of the more common commands below.

What commands can I run inside Crosh?

top:  This command is used to list the top consuming processes on the system by processor power and memory consumption. This is helpful for tracking down issues. For more information type help inside crosh and reference the section about top.

ping: Ping another machine on the network. This is helpful when checking connectivity on the network. For more information type help inside Crosh and reference the section about ping.

ssh: Connect to another client or machine using ssh. For more information type help inside Crosh and reference the section about ssh.

Crosh developer mode

To access further functionality from Crosh such as shell, ChromeOS needs to be in developer mode. (developer mode )

Advanced Crosh capabilities

Crosh gives access to greater capabilities with your chromebook. You can dual boot into a full linux environment with full linux capabilities. On my chromebook I was able to run 0AD and steam. The graphics were not great but it worked! Let me know if you guys are interested in a step by step guide and I can build a walkthrough on how to run Steam on a chromebook.
